What is a bursary?

We understand that some of our learners will need financial help during their further education and it is our aim to use the 16-19 Bursary Fund to assist those who need it most.

Under the 16-19 Bursary Scheme, Sixth Form providers can make discretionary bursary awards to students to help them overcome the individual barriers to participation they face, for example help with the cost of transport, books and equipment. A decision for a learner’s entitlement will be made on an individual basis and will be awarded in the following ways:

1.      Students to send in receipts for eligible payments to be reimbursed when required.

2.      Contributions towards enrichment opportunities and travel for educational events

3.      Contributions towards text books and subject materials

Please note that you will need to meet these conditions to receive your Bursary payments. Failure to meet these conditions may result in payments not being issued.

Attendance and Punctuality Conditions:

-          You must ensure that you attend school every day – maintaining 90% and above

-          You must ensure that you are punctual to school and lessons

-          You must ensure that you attend all lessons

-          Some absence or lateness may be authorised, but it is your responsibility to inform the school or any absences

Behaviour and Conduct Conditions

-          You must always follow the Sixth Form dress code

-          You must use independent study time and the school facilities appropriately

-          You must display a suitable work ethic and ensure that you are up-to-date in all curriculum areas

How do I apply?

Application forms and further information are available from Ms Bulheller in the finance office or you can find more information on our school website. If demand exceeds the available funds, reduced awards may be given and when the fund is fully committed, no further awards are made. For this reason please ensure that application forms and supporting documents are submitted as early as possible.

All students applying for the Bursary must hold a bank account in their own name. They will be able to claim money from the bursary by submitting the required evidence for the purchase. The Bursary is a discretionary payment. The schools reserves the right to withdraw bursary payments if students do not attend school or follow the student code of conduct at any time.

What evidence will you need to provide to support your application:

Students should provide evidence to support their eligibility by presenting relevant documents such as:

• Letters from the Department of Work and Pensions setting out the benefits you are entitled to. If in receipt of Universal Credit, we require a copy of the latest three statements in full.

• Local authority letters supporting the fact that the student is in care.

• A P60 for all jobs worked in this financial year. This is required in addition to your Universal Credit statements.

Who is eligible?

If you are eligible for Free School Meals you should apply – students who receive Free School Meals are automatically eligible for a Bursary Award. Students should check when their eligibility for Free School Meals expires if they have received FSM lower down in the school. This will ensure applications and paper work can be supported by up-to-date Free School Meal status.

Each application will be assessed on an individual basis; a learner’s eligibility for support does not automatically entitle them to receive it and it is not guaranteed that all students in this category will receive an award.
